1 medium-sized red or yellow onion, peeled and chopped
1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger root (about 2 to 3 inches), peeled and chopped
1 whole lemon, preferably organic
4 tablespoons of raw honey (preferably organic and unfiltered)
1/2 cup of water (filtered)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
Garlic: Peel 4 fresh garlic cloves. You can crush them slightly with the side of a knife to release their natural oils and increase their health benefits. Allicin, the compound in garlic responsible for its medicinal power, is best activated when crushed and left to rest for about 10 minutes before use.
Onion: Peel and roughly chop one medium-sized onion. Red onions tend to have more antioxidants, but yellow onions are also effective. Chopping helps release their natural compounds, especially quercetin, which is known for anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects.
Ginger: Wash and peel a thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger root. Chop it finely. Ginger contains gingerol, a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that supports digestion and fights infections.
Lemon: Wash the lemon thoroughly. Cut it into quarters or slices. If you prefer, you can peel it first to avoid bitterness from the rind, but the peel also contains beneficial compounds like limonene.
Step 2: Blend the Mixture
Place the chopped garlic, onion, ginger, and lemon slices into a blender or food processor.
Add about 1/2 cup of water to help blend the ingredients smoothly.
Blend on high speed for about 30 to 45 seconds, or until the mixture becomes a thick, slightly coarse paste. If necessary, stop and scrape down the sides of the blender to ensure everything is mixed evenly.
Step 3: Add the Honey
Pour the blended mixture into a clean glass jar or bowl.
Add 4 tablespoons of raw honey. Stir thoroughly until the honey is well combined. Honey not only adds sweetness to balance the strong flavour but also has antimicrobial and soothing properties.
How to Use
Take one teaspoon of this mixture once a day, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach for maximum absorption.
For children over one year old, you can reduce the dosage to half a teaspoon, but always consult a healthcare provider first.
Storage
Store the mixture in a clean, airtight glass jar in the refrigerator.
It can last up to 7 days in the fridge, but for best results, make a fresh batch weekly.
Optional Variations
Add turmeric: A small pinch of ground turmeric can increase the anti-inflammatory benefits.
Use apple cider vinegar: Replace part of the water with apple cider vinegar for added detox support.
Strain the mixture: If you prefer a smoother liquid tonic, strain it through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth after blending, then stir in the honey.
